Tackle & Guns Secret Shopper

T & G's Special agent identifies the best and worst of customer service.... The agent recently visited our shop and the following report was produced in the October 2007 release of the popular Tackle & Guns, Britain's only monthly Shooting & Fishing Trade Publication.

First Impressions

The Shop looks an average size and, due to a street running down one side, has a commanding corner position. The two window displays are neatly set out with seatboxes in one and poles displayed in the other. The building is clean, tidy and well kept, with plenty of parking in the nearby side streets.

Step Inside

This was quite a surprise as the shop is much smaller than you'd imagine from the outside. However, space is put to good use with poles and rods to your left on horizontal racks. It's obvious the shop is totally geared up for match and pleasure fishing, with the emphasis on match - it will soon become apparent why.

Show It Off

The shop may well be on the small side but it's well organised so, although it is well stocked with products, it doesn't look crammed. The glass-topped serving counter is used well as it displays reels and other sundries. Around the shop are pegboards and shelving abound and are sensibly stocked.

Behind the counter are the now familiar pegboards layouts holding hooks, hooks to nylon, pole rigs and so on. Here they also store maggots and casters. However, now other smaller particle baits are becoming popular on the match scene, to the left you'll find a variety that'll possibly get you in the frame.

Luggage and nets are sensibly sited around the shop from manufactures such as Preston Innovations, Tri-Cast and Rive. Clothing is also in evidence with a match and pleasure orientation rather than, the now in vogue, carp camou wear.

Do I need this?

You definitely wouldn't be sold anything you didn't need here.

Pushy or Pleasing?

Very Pleasing Manner.

After Sales?

All usual guarantees apply on goods bought as new, and advice is given out even on a problem with a product bought elsewhere. While I was there a guy was talking to Mr Smith about the lack of service he'd received on a pole he'd bought elsewhere and from contacting the manufacturer. Mr Smith couldn't have been more helpful, telling him the best places to get it fixed and, because the manufacturers had been so unhelpful to the man, even told him to seek consumer advice. Superb service....

What's Happening and Where?

No secrets here. lots of flyers around for local fisheries, and the matches coming up are well advertised, furthermore, from what I've heard through the grapevine, - if Highfield Angling have anything to do with it, it's always very well organised as well.

90/100 - Though the shop is small, if you're into match fishing this is a little Mecca, correction - goldmine for tackle, technical advice and all manner of information. I think the overall score of 90/100 clearly indicates that in fact it's very impressive, but again I stress - for the match fishing fraternity only...
